Direct, exposed and utilitarian accurately describe Industrial style. It is the exposed nature of the design that delivers the distinct industrial look. Welds, rivets, mechanisms and other details that are hidden behind the scenes in most other styles are often intentionally on display in Industrial style. It conveys the idea that the work isn't far removed from the rawness of the materials used in its crafting. Steampunk sensibilities build upon Industrial style by creating a bridge to styles like Victorian, Vintage, Art Deco and Rustic.
