Mercedes Courland Interiors

Contemporary dining room featuring summer pendant by Hubbardton Forge

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Mercedes Courland, owner of Mercedes Courland Interiors, Inc. is the focus of our designer spotlight. Although she’s based in Florida, due to her in-demand design services, her work can be seen on projects across the country. We caught up with her to talk about her background and a recent project with a space she’s very familiar that features Hubbardton Forge lighting.

Mercedes Courland Interiors HF: How would you describe your design style?
MC: My style is trending toward modern/transitional, mixed with classical details. I use lots of textures, color and fabulous fabrics, mixing geometrics and textures.

HF: Where do you get your design inspiration?
MC: My inspiration comes from travel – Paris of course, but many times nature has provided me with stunning color schemes that I have used in creating an interior concept. I have written a book on color, “Living Color Fully.” There is terrific inspiration wherever we look.

HF: This particular project is actually your own house. What were your goals for the space?
I wanted to make an elegant, yet totally practical and beachy home with lots of light.

HF: Were there any big design challenges you had to overcome?
The biggest challenge was eliminating the 1980s’ styling with large sloping ceilings and lack of detail. I took out many walls and created a dropped, coffered ceiling with deep coffers in aqua tone – the same color as the pool. Beyond that, I gutted every ounce of the 1980s.

HF: What are your favorite things about this space?
I love the voluminous space and the incredible amount of light. It feels very ethereal.

HF: How did Hubbardton Forge lighting and that design get picked for this project?
MC: I loved the Four Seasons collection the minute I saw it. I also thought the Summer Pendant had gorgeous geometry that I hadn’t seen in a chandelier before. It was a perfect addition to my design and the window beyond it gives it a nice background.
